“TV to go” – new on-board enter­tain­ment for tra­vel­lers in regio­nal traffic

DB Fahr­zeug­in­stand­hal­tung and DB Regio sub­si­dia­ry West­fran­ken­bahn are pre­sen­ting a new ser­vice for the first time at Inno­Trans 2018 on the open-air site, track 11/400, tog­e­ther with the part­ners HOTSPLOTS and dai­l­y­me TV

DB Fahr­zeug­in­stand­hal­tung (Vehi­cle Main­ten­an­ce) and the West­fran­ken­bahn will be pre­sen­ting fur­ther deve­lo­p­ments in on-board enter­tain­ment for regio­nal trans­port at this year’s lea­ding inter­na­tio­nal tra­de fair for rail tech­no­lo­gy, Inno­Trans 2018 in Ber­lin (18.09 to 21.09.).

Tog­e­ther with the dai­l­y­me TV video plat­form and the WLAN pro­vi­der HOTSPLOTS, a new enter­tain­ment ser­vice for tra­vel­lers in regio­nal traf­fic has been deve­lo­ped: “TV to go”.

How the new enter­tain­ment ser­vice works: First, HOTSPLOTS “TV to go” stores seri­es and movies on the vehicle’s Wi-Fi hot­spot. In a second step, the­se are then brought onto the ad-sup­por­ted app “dai­l­y­me TV” on pas­sen­gers’ ter­mi­nals such as tablets or smartphones.

For this pur­po­se, the app uses the Wi-Fi hot­spot of the train. The spe­cial thing about it is that, even after the end of the jour­ney, the films can be wat­ched off­line. Through the app, it is pos­si­ble to down­load movies and seri­es onto a device.

The dai­ly updated con­tents of dai­l­y­me TV are trans­mit­ted to the vehi­cles via “WLAN petrol sta­ti­ons” in the vehi­cle depot or via LTE en route.

The Coli­bri plat­form deve­lo­ped by DB Fahr­zeug­in­stand­hal­tung is used for this ent­i­re pro­cess. This plat­form con­sists of various IT com­pon­ents such as WLAN, video sur­veil­lan­ce, or pas­sen­ger infor­ma­ti­on sys­tems. As part of a rede­sign, Coli­bri will be instal­led in 35 VT642-seri­es vehi­cles by the end of 2019.

Our pas­sen­gers are accus­to­med to being able to access a wide varie­ty of media,” says Mel­vin Zinn­gre­be, pro­ject mana­ger at DB Fahr­zeug­in­stand­hal­tung. “I am glad that we have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to deve­lop sta­te-of-the-art IT pro­ducts even off the bea­ten track, and to offer our cus­to­mers con­tem­pora­ry and attrac­ti­ve content.”

The app opens a direct com­mu­ni­ca­ti­on and mar­ke­ting chan­nel to the pas­sen­gers. That’s how we crea­te a win-win situa­ti­on for pas­sen­gers and trans­por­ta­ti­on companies.”
